Uiteindelik
En uiteindelik breek my dag toe aan: my nuwe vleuelklavier is vandag afgelewer.
Danksy Gerhard het ek nou die dag na klaviere gaan kyk in Stellenbosch, en toe staan hierdie een daar wat eintlik vir iemand anders bestel was. Gelukkig vir my het die mense nooit die klavier kom optel nie, en toe word hy aan my verkoop.
Die bank moes maar bontstaan, maar hulle het darem ingestem en die lening toegestaan.

First impressions: Beethoven Piano Sonatas - András Schiff
I bought as much of this new series of Sonatas as I could get hold of after listening short excerpts. Mr Schiff provides a wonderful, new and fresh interpretation of these great works, and impresses with his great technical ability, but also truly sensitive playing. Unfortunately, he tends to spoil some of the wonder by literally hammering out his fortissimo passages in a way that might even surprise and upset those of us who value interpretation that is true to the presumed style of playing prevalent during Beethoven's lifetime.
Playing is (as mentioned by another reviewer) sometimes unexpectedly sluggish. The thing that clearly stands out is his playing of the slower movements which is crisp, but gentle with wonderful consideration of melodic lines.
But this collection of discs will probably do for the Beethoven Piano Sonatas what Anne-Sophie Mutter and Lambert Orkis did for the Beethoven Violin sonatas with their recent recordings: providing a new sound and fresh interpretations to some of the most wonderful music ever composed.

Meloncino: The culinary 'Weakest Link' - V&A Waterfront, Cape Town
Fab location, spacious, funky interior. Menu? Too large and HOPELESSLY overpriced. Wine selection aimed at those who know very little and all wines at least double the retail price. Food quality? Average and not worth the price. Unimaginative.
Obviously overspent on interior design/decorating and now customers have to pay for it.
Exploiting tourists with strong currencies and alienating local support - but so do most of the establishments in the V&A!

Setting up an internet connection with Sony Ericsson K850i
The SE K850 provides three ways in which an internet connection can be established with a computer:
1. USB (LAN/Ethernet Emulation)
2. Dial-up networking
3. Bluetooth (dial-up networking and Bluetooth PAN)
These guidelines only focus on the dial-up networking and USB connection, seeing that these connections cause the most error messages, especially “Hardware failure”, and “PPP control link protocol” errors (Error 734).
It seems as if the dial-up networking is slowly being phased out, and USB connection receives more attention. The USB connection is also much easier to set up and by installing the SE PC Suite that comes bundled with the handset, there is really not that much to set up.
However, it might not be feasible to install the PC Suite on every computer where the internet connection is required. This does bring the problem of installing the USB drivers for the phone seperately.
Should you have to install the drivers manually (if the computer is not yet connected to the internet by any other means), please download them from the blog.
If the computer that you wish to install the phone on already is connected to the internet, then manual installation of the drivers is not necessary. Just connect the provided USB cable to the phone and computer, and installation will commence automatically through Windows Update. Just a warning, depending on the computer and its connection speed, this may take quite a bit of time – up to 20 minutes!
When installation of your phone is complete, Windows will indicate this by showing a message at the lower right corner of the screen stating that the device is installed and ready to be used.
Every time you now connect the phone and computer via USB cable, the phone will automatically connect to the internet. Look on the handset for the little globe icon next to the signal strength bars.
If you have a look in Network Connections on an Windows XP computer, you will see a new connection listed under “LAN or High-Speed Internet” called Local Area Connection. If another LAN is active, the it will show as Local Area Connection 2 or 3 etc.
Now for the important bit: You will ONLY be able to start accessing the internet if ONLY the phone-computer LAN is active. As long as any other LAN is active and connected, you will not be able to get on the internet even though the phone is already connected to the internet.
You will therefore have to DISABLE the LAN connection that will not be used. In the example below the Broadcom NetXtreme LAN is an intranet connection. Right-click and select disable. You can right-click and enable once you are done surfing the net with your phone.

This is how the Network connections page will look once the intranet LAN is disabled and the Phone LAN is active (Sony Ericsson K850 Vod…). This LAN is already renamed to distinguish it from the other LAN. By default it wil just read Local Area Connection 2 or 3 etc.
Internet Explorer should now detect the LAN as one connected to the internet.
Once you are done on the internet, safely remove the Sony Ericsson Device 117 USB Ethernet Emulation (NDIS 5) by clicking the hardware icon at the lower right part of the toolbar.

This number “3” is the CID number and must correspond to the data account on your handset with the same CID number. In practice this means that the account I use to access the internet on my phone is the third one in the list of accounts set up on my phone.
Very important: this connection will NOT work if your LAN connection with your phone is still active. The LAN connection is automatically established once you plug the USB cable into your phone! Trying to use the dial-up connection while the LAN connection is active WILL result in an “Error 734: PPP link protocol terminated” and may even cause your phone to crash.
Disable the phone-related LAN connection first and then connect with the dial-up network that you have set up.
Please note that getting the PPP error is not ONLY the result of an active LAN connection. It might also indicate that the dial-up connection’s security settings is incompatible with what is expected from the mobile operator. It might also indicate that you have to add an extra dial-string command in the settings for the Sony Ericsson modem the connection uses to communicate with the phone. However, this is rarely needed.
Dial-string commands can be added by accessing the Windows Control Panel > Phone and Modem Settings. Select the DATA modem (there are 2 Sony Ericsson modems installed) which will be ticked anyway. Right-click and select properties. Under the Advanced tab, dial-string commands can be added which usually look like this: at+cgdcont=[CID number],”IP”,”[APN]”.
